Does the Bible say the Earth is flat?

Isiah 40:22  It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:

Job 26:7  He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.

I decided to start with the two verses I always hear in defense of the Bibles cosmology.  This is the best they got folks.  Science got it right with the Greeks.  Hell, Eratosthenes not only knew it was spherical, in 300 BCE he accurately calculated how far it was to go around it and got the right answer.  The only thing science ever said about it was that it was a ball.  But of course the Bible convinced more than a few otherwise in the Middle Ages.

Let’s talk about the two things above.  First, unless you missed Kindergarten you would have discussed shapes.  A circle is flat.  It always was flat.  It always will be flat.  I’ve had Christians tell me that Hebrew doesn’t have a word for sphere, so I looked it up.  They were sorta right.  It has at least two. (The original word was חוּג chûg khoog > כדור (he) (kadúr) m., ספרה (he) (sféra) f   BOTH literally translate as sphere)

The second one says “hangs on nothing”  Well OK, that might be close.  But it doesn’t hang, it orbits the Sun.  That’s closer to floating, but really it falls at the Sun and misses, over and over and over.  But even so….that really doesn’t mean it’s not flat.  Also orbiting seems to contradict the many verses that say it doesn’t move.
Psalms 104:5  Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever.
Psalms 96:10  Say among the heathen that the LORD reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously.
Psalms 93:1  The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.

(There are a few more like 1 Chronicles 16:30 or Isaiah 45:18)

So why do I think it says it’s flat.  My favorite example is when Jesus is dead.  Him and Satan end up on top of a rather remarkable mountain.
Matthew 4:8-9 The devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee.

That one is pretty impressive.  You can see all the places that people live on a mountain.  Even if you had eyesight way better than ours, that still doesn’t work on something that’s not flat.  I mean a telescope on top of Everest ain’t going to be able to see though the Earth.  And I can point out that Daniel 4:10-1 says the same thing, but it’s a tree and a king.  Revelation says that everyone will be able to see Jesus when he comes back.  Doesn’t really matter how high or big he is on a sphere.

Job alternately says it has a foundation and it sits on pillars.  I know…no contradictions, but how that jives with the Isiah verse about it hanging is beyond me.
Job 9:6  Which shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.
Job 38:4  Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.

There are massive numbers of verses saying the Earth has corners, things are longer than it’s length, and so forth.  There isn’t room for them all.  There are also lots about the sky that make it sound like a big dome.  The Sun gets stopped to make the day longer, and it has to rush to its starting place over night.

But the BEST evidence the Bible says the Earth is flat is that in the Middle Ages, that what the freakin’ church said that it said. I mean the best minds in the world looked at it when they didn’t know the answer (they should have since the Greeks figured it out, but that was lost), and they decided that it said it was flat.  They even took it out on the scientists who said they were wrong.
